Microsoft brings Auto HDR to Windows 10

Microsoft is planning to automatically add HDR support to more than 1,000 PC games. The software maker is now testing a new Auto HDR feature on Windows 10, which works just like it does on the latest Xbox Series S and X consoles. Enabling Auto HDR will add high dynamic range (HDR) to a large number of DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games, as long as you have a compatible HDR monitor.
Now, a preview of the feature is coming to PC, which will allow for automatic “awesome HDR visuals on an additional 1,000+ DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 games.”
As Microsoft explains, HDR is a technique whereby light and dark spots in a “digitally reproduced scene can be shown with more detail than before.” When it comes to video games, gamers can be more immersed in the experience overall, with the environment and details being more vibrant.
Here’s how you can enable the Auto HDR feature:
First, you should have an HDR monitor equipped PC.
Auto HDR for PC is currently a preview feature only available in the Windows Insider Program (Dev Channel). You can download the Windows 10 Build 21337 to try this feature.
After installing the build, if your PC monitor is already configured to use HDR, you will automatically receive the Auto HDR PC gaming experience. Otherwise, to explicitly enable/disable Auto HDR, go to Windows HD Color Settings page and enable the Auto HDR toggle.
